DP® Spiral Jet Mill - Working Principle, Material Processing and Application

The DP® Spiral Jet Mill is a fluid-energy grinding machine designed for fine and ultra-fine grinding of suitable dry materials. It uses high-velocity compressed air or gas to accelerate particles inside the grinding chamber, where particle-to-particle collisions reduce the material to a finer powder.

How Does a Spiral Jet Mill Work?

The working principle of a Spiral Jet Mill is based on high-velocity air jets and particle-to-particle impact.

The material is fed into the grinding chamber, where compressed air or gas creates high-speed jets. These jets accelerate the particles, causing them to collide with one another. The resulting impact and attrition reduce the particle size.

Fine particles are carried out of the grinding zone with the air stream, while coarser particles remain in the grinding zone for further size reduction. The fine powder is then transferred to the appropriate collection system.

Materials Processed Using Spiral Jet Mill

The DP® Spiral Jet Mill can be evaluated for various suitable dry materials, depending on their physical properties and required final particle size.

Typical applications include:

  • Pharmaceutical powders and ingredients

  • Fine and specialty chemicals

  • Minerals

  • Pigments and specialty powders

  • Cosmetic ingredients

  • Heat-sensitive dry materials

  • Other fine and ultra-fine powder applications

Material characteristics such as hardness, moisture, feed size, density, brittleness, abrasiveness and flowability should be considered before selecting the grinding technology.

Key Advantages of Spiral Jet Milling

The DP® Spiral Jet Mill offers a specialized approach to fine powder processing:

  • Fine and ultra-fine grinding of suitable materials

  • Particle-to-particle grinding

  • No conventional grinding media

  • Reduced mechanical contact during grinding

  • Suitable for selected heat-sensitive applications

  • Controlled particle-size processing

  • Suitable for specialized powder applications

Choosing the Right Grinding Mill

A Spiral Jet Mill is not suitable for every material. The right grinding technology depends on the material, feed size, required particle size, production capacity, moisture content, heat sensitivity and product requirements.

Material testing can help determine the appropriate mill configuration and expected grinding performance before commercial-scale equipment selection.
