Material hardness vs grinding machine selection

Material hardness vs grinding machine selection

Not every material should be processed using the same grinding principle.

Material hardness, abrasiveness, moisture, oil/grease content, toughness and required particle size all influence grinding machine selection.

Soft to Medium Hard Materials

Materials such as cereals, spices, sugar and certain chemicals can be processed using impact- or pin-type grinding systems, depending on the required fineness and process requirements.

DP® Impact Pulveriser

Suitable for a broad range of coarse-to-fine grinding applications.

DP® Contra Pin Mill

Designed for fine grinding of oily, greasy, sticky and heat-sensitive materials, where conventional grinding may present challenges. Its high-intensity grinding action can be configured according to the material and required particle size.

Hard & Abrasive Materials

Materials such as minerals, pigments, graphite and other abrasive solids require attention to grinding components, wear resistance and product-contact materials.

DP® sACM Air Classifier Mill

Combines impact grinding with air classification for controlled fine-powder processing.

For abrasive applications, grinding-element material, liner selection and contact-surface configuration can be specified according to the application.

Why Material Properties Matter

Material properties directly influence grinding energy requirements, wear rates of grinding components, achievable particle size, throughput, heat generation, material flow behaviour, selection of grinding principle and machine configuration.

Hardness is only one part of the equation.

A material with moderate hardness can still be difficult to grind if it is oily, greasy, sticky, fibrous or heat-sensitive.

DP Pulveriser Approach

Machine selection should consider the complete application, including material, feed size, hardness, abrasiveness, oil and grease content, moisture, required particle size distribution, capacity and grinding principle.

Application trials and material testing can help establish the appropriate grinding solution.
